Finding a reputable Massage Therapist
With so many different massage types around it’s just too confusing for the average person to choose what is right for them. You need to choose a therapist that is registered with a reputable association, such a member of the Australian Natural Therapy Association (ANTA), or the Australian Association of Massage Therapists (AAMT).
These associations require members to obtain certain qualifications before joining and they have strict compliancy standards for the therapists ensuring they maintain on-going education and training, current First Aid certification, and insurances.
The professional associations also have a code of ethics that the therapists must adhere to. This is designed to protect the community and ensure high level of standards and safety.
Current Pricing for Massage in Brisbane
Pricing is not always a good indication of what you can expect to get. Massage prices in Brisbane vary from $20 - $155 per hour and this is often more about environment (and perhaps experience) than quality.
The most important thing is that you receive the treatment which is most suited to your needs. Ask when booking if this therapist or clinic:
- offers follow up care & advice
- can offer Health Fund Rebates (even if you are not insured, at least this way you can know that your therapist is a recognised health professional)
- is a member of a professional association,
- has training and experience with your particular concern (pregnancy, deep tissue, muscle tears, post-surgery, cancer, etc)
The best way to tell is usually word of mouth, a recommendation from friends, family or work colleagues, but should you not have that, look for a guarantee and trust your gut-feel.
Is massage Dangerous?
Massage therapy, when performed by professional qualified therapists, is one of the safest therapies available to choose from today. It has been in existence for many hundreds of years and has been practiced everywhere from homes, medical clinics, and workplaces, to sporting venues.
But can it cause injuries? Well thankfully there has been very few incidents ever reported of massage induced injuries.
The risk of injury with massage therapy is of course higher if you have a pre-existing medical condition and you don’t inform the therapist, or a condition that is undetectable such as a thrombosis (blood clot). For this reason it is important to tell the therapist all of your symptoms and everything you can about your medical history (even if you think that it’s not important – think again, it probably is), and notify them immediately if you don’t feel right during the session or after. In summary, it is extremely rare to have a bad reaction to massage unless there is a pre-existing condition.
