Finding a reputable Massage Therapist
With so many different massage types around it’s just too confusing for the average person to choose what is right for them. You need to choose a therapist that is registered with a reputable association, a member of the Australian Natural Therapy Association (ANTA), or the Australian Association of Massage Therapists (AAMT). These associations require members to obtain certain qualifications before joining and they have strict compliancy standards for the therapists ensuring they maintain on-going education and training, current First Aid certification, and insurances. The associations also have a code of ethics that the therapists must adhere to. This is designed to protect the community and ensure high level of standards and safety.
Current Pricing for Massage in Brisbane
Pricing is a good indication of what you can expect to get. The average price in Brisbane is about $70 per hour. If you are paying above $80 for a 1 hour massage you should expect to be getting a day spa treatment which is designed to feel nice (usually very light, skin deep massage only) although not specific or deep enough to do anything other than increase circulation and ease nervous tension. If you are paying under $55 you can expect to be going to someone’s home clinic where they may accept cash payment only, may not offer health fund rebates, and have no guarantee that you will be treated professionally or ethically in accordance with the current code of practice. Having said this, there are a number of very professional people working from home and they offer great service – the best way to tell is usually word of mouth, a recommendation from friends, family or work colleagues.
Is massage Dangerous?
Massage therapy is one of the safest therapies available to choose from today. It has been in existence for many hundreds of years and has been practiced everywhere from homes, medical clinics, and workplaces, to sporting venues. But can it cause injuries? Well thankfully there has been very few incidents ever reported of massage induced injuries. Considering that the cost of Malpractice Insurance for the average massage therapist is about $200 per year, you can see that the insurance companies also see massage as a low risk option (compared with that of a Chiropractor at $4000 plus).
The risk of injury with massage therapy is of course higher if you have a pre-existing medical condition and you don’t inform the therapist, or a condition that is undetectable such as a thrombosis (blood clot). For this reason it is important to tell the therapist all of your symptoms and everything you can about your medical history (even if you think that it’s not important – think again, it probably is), and notify them immediately if you don’t feel right during the session or after. In summary, it is extremely rare to have a bad reaction to massage unless there is a pre-existing condition.
